Dao Selected for Editor’s Choice Journal of Structural Engineering
By Natalie Crouse
Dr. Thang N. Dao, associate professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, has been selected for an Editor’s Choice distinction by the Journal of Structural Engineering. This leading peer-reviewed journal, published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, features research advancing theory and practice in structural engineering. Editor’s Choice papers are selected by the journal’s chief editor from each issue and recognize studies that make a notable contribution to the field.
The article co-authored by Dao introduces a general hysteresis model for applications in structural dynamics, addressing challenges in representing nonlinear behavior and energy dissipation in structural systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loading. Hysteresis models are essential for predicting how structures respond to external forces, particularly during extreme events such as earthquakes and high winds.
The proposed model provides a flexible framework applicable across a variety of structural components. By improving analytical accuracy, the research supports performance-based design approaches and contributes to the development of safer, more resilient infrastructure.
The Editor’s Choice recognition highlights the quality and impact of Dao’s work and brings positive visibility to the department’s research within the broader engineering community. Click here to read the article.
