The Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering adheres to the graduate admission requirements defined by UA’s Graduate School and the College of Engineering. Admission requirements differ slightly for each degree program.

University Scholars students must apply and be accepted into the program prior to taking any graduate-level courses.

Accelerated Masters Program (Dual Bachelor and Master Program)

  • Available only to UA undergraduate students
  • Completed at least 91 credit hours towards the bachelor’s degree (transfer credit hours not included)
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale

Master of Science in Civil Engineering
Master of Science in Engineering–Environmental

  • Applicants earned ABET/EAC-accredited baccalaureate degree
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination, GRE, score of 300 – 150 Verbal and 150 Quantitative.
  • Applicants without an earned ABET/EAC-accredited degree
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 300 (150 Verbal; 150 Quantitative).
  • For international (non-native English language) students
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 300 (150 Verbal; 150 Quantitative).
    • Minimum TOEFL score 550 pBT or 79 iBT (the TOEFL requirement is waived for students who have earned a degree from a U.S. institution within two years prior to application)

Note: An applicant may be considered for conditional admission if he/she meets all admission requirements but a GPA of at least 2.5. Admission in such cases is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Doctor of Philosophy

  • Applicants earned ABET/EAC-accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed, or at least a 3.0 for a graduate degree
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination, GRE, score of 300 – 150 Verbal and 150 Quantitative.
  • Applicants without an earned ABET/EAC-accredited degree
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed, or at least a 3.0 for a graduate degree
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 300 (150 Verbal; 150 Quantitative).
  • For international (non-native English language) students
    • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, at least a 3.0 for the last 60 credit hours completed, or at least a 3.0 for a graduate degree
    • Minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 300 (150 Verbal; 150 Quantitative).
    • Minimum TOEFL score 550 pBT or 79 iBT (the TOEFL requirement is waived for students who have earned a degree from a U.S. institution within three years prior to application)

Dual Master in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy
Dual Master in Environmental Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy

  • For students without an MSCE or MSE earned from a U.S. institution
  • Same admission requirements as the Doctor of Philosophy
  • Conditional admission is not allowed in the dual MSCE/PhD or MSE/PhD degree programs

Dual Master in Civil Engineering and Master of Business Administration

  • Admission to the Master in Civil Engineering program does not guarantee admission into the Dual Master in Civil Engineering and Master of Business Administration program.
  • Candidates must be unconditionally admitted to both the MSCE and MBA programs.
  • Admission is for the fall semester only.
  • Meet regular admission criteria for the Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Admission information for the Master of Business Administration
    • A small class of 95 students is admitted each fall.
    • Either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) can be accepted as part of the admission process.
  • For international (non-native English language) students, a minimum TOEFL score 550 pBT or 79 iBT (the TOEFL requirement is waived for students who have earned a degree from a U.S. institution within three years prior to application)

Dual Master in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Jurisprudence

  • Admission to the Master in Civil Engineering program does not guarantee admission into the Dual Master in Civil Engineering and Doctor of Jurisprudence program.
  • Candidates must be unconditionally admitted to both the MSCE and JD programs.
  • Admission is for the fall semester only.
  • Meet regular admission criteria for the Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Admission information for the JD
    • The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) must be taken and submitted as part of the admission process.
    • Applicants must subscribe to the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS).
  • For international (non-native English language) students, a minimum TOEFL score 550 pBT or 79 iBT (the TOEFL requirement is waived for students who have earned a degree from a U.S. institution within three years prior to application)
